The Future Port Expansion (FPE) Seawall Alliance Project involved the construction of 4.5km of perimeter seawall, which allowed the Port of Brisbane Corporation to reclaim the 230ha of area enclosed within for future land development. An alliance form of project delivery was chosen to combat the challenges associated with a project of this scope and to provide benefits in terms of cost and efficiency of implementation.
The new seawall, located at Fisherman Islands at the mouth of the Brisbane River, extends 1.8km from existing port facilities into Moreton Bay, and then sweep around to rejoin the mainland 1.4km from its starting point.
The raw materials required for the seawall were impressive:
• 1.2 million tonnes of rock quarry products
• 425,000m³ of sand
• 220,000m² of high strength geotextile for structural support
• 150,000m² of filtration geotextile as a separation membrane between rock and sand to protect against wave and current action.
Robbins was responsible for the engineering, design and detailing of the geotextile layer.
National Case Earth Award 2005
The overall national winner in the Construction Excellence Category was the FPE Seawall Alliance for the Future Port Expansion seawall project at the Port of Brisbane. The seawall is one of the biggest marine-based projects ever undertaken in Queensland, catering for rapid commercial growth around Brisbane’s port area, through the provision of an additional 230ha of land. The project’s alliance style delivery encouraged engineering innovation during planning, design and construction as well as ensuring the Port of Brisbane Corporation’s strong environmental focus was retained throughout. The project was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget in December 2004.
