Australian Zircon NL (AZ) developed a green-field mineral sands mine, wet concentrate plant, dry separation plant, distribution facilities and associated infrastructure at their Mindarie mine site near the township of Mindarie approximately 200km east of Adelaide, South Australia. AZ will mine and recover valuable heavy mineral sands from the ore resource. Robbins commenced work in March 2006 and completed the project in October 2007.
Robbins provided design, procurement, site coordination, construction and commissioning of the processing plants as follows.
Section 1 – Mining Plant
Section 2 – Primary Concentrate Plant (PCP)
Section 3 – Mineral Separation Plant (MSP) and Concentrate Upgrade Plant (CUP)
Section 4 – PCP / CUP Process Water
Section 5 – MSP Process Water
Section 6 – Reagent Handling and Preparation
An estimated resource of 44.7 million tonnes of heavy minerals are available for recovery yielding an annual average production of some:
• 31,000 tonnes of zircon
• 60,000 tonnes of ilmenite
• 6,000 tonnes of rutile
• 4,000 tonnes of leucoxene
Due to the unique nature of the ore body and current methods being unsuitable, Robbins designed an innovative in-pit miner slurry unit to deliver the head feed to the Primary Concentrator Plant.
